Rich In The Things That Matter

Those passing through Anson County, won’t see much beyond trees and farmland – but for the people who live here, that’s the beauty of it.

“It’s poor in the things of the world,” says Anson’s tourism manager Lynn Horton. “But it’s totally rich in the things that matter.”

Today, South Piedmont Community College welcomed a special guest – North Carolina Poet Laureate, Joseph Bathanti.

Bathanti is a professor of creative writing at Appalachian State University – and his award-winning writings have been inspired by Anson County.

“You enter some of the most beautiful, yet abandoned country that I’ve ever been around,” Bathanti said. “It’s haunted in all the best ways. It’s filled with history, it’s filled with mystery.”
