This past spring, Touring Theatre of North Carolina issued a call for submissions from veterans, their family members, and active duty personnel. The company sought poetry, as well as other writing, that spoke directly to the experiences of serving and the aftermath of returning to civilian life. Over the course of two months, Touring Theatre received hundreds of submissions covering seven different wars beginning with WWI and stretching to today’s conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Submissions covered a broad swath of geographic territory including entries from both coasts and encompassing several military installations including West Point.
Touring Theatre producing artistic director Brenda P. Schluenes, in consultation with N.C. poet laureate Joseph Bathanti has assembled a collage of the most evocative of the submissions into a piece of readers’ theatre for five voices and guitar. “Deployed” will premiere Friday, Nov. 8, 2013 at Mack and Mack, 220 South Elm Street in downtown Greensboro, followed by performances on Saturday, Nov. 9, Friday, Nov.15 and Saturday, Nov. 16. All shows begin at 8 p.m. For tickets or more information, visit http://www.ttnc.org/ .
